Pre-season has started for

Manchester United

as they took on Championship side

Wrexham

at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki. Sam Smith's first half goal gave Wrexham a 1-0 win.

Wrexham had a couple of early chances as they caught United off guard with their high press, but United stood firm under the pressure. Things settled down more after the first 10 minutes or so, but they still had to be wary of the counter-attack.

Michael Carrick

's team struggled to deal with longer balls from the Championship side. But, it was from a throw-in that Wrexham took the lead. The ball made its way past the six-yard box, where an unmarked Smith was there to put it in an empty net.

That goal was the one that separated the two at the half-time whistle. Wrexham, who are further into the pre-season preparations, looked sharper and deserved their lead.

United made 11 changes at half-time, with the team for the second 45 having a much more youthful look as the young players were given a chance to impress Carrick. Despite the youthfulness of the squad, United looked more comfortable on the ball, with Wrexham also making several changes at the half-time break.

Wrexham did have the chance to double their lead, though, with United having

Radak Vitek to thank for keeping the score at 1-0.

The youthful team pushed for an equaliser, but only had half-chances, with Danny Ward only called into action to make comfortable saves. United were left frustrated as the Welsh team saw out the game.

Tom Heaton 5

Made an early mistake to give Wrexham a chance to take the lead. couldn't do much for the Wrexham goal.

Leny Yoro 5

Played an unfamiliar right-back role. That may have played a part in Wrexham's opening goal, which came from the United right.

Ayden Heaven 4

Was too casual in possession to give the ball away in the first half, but made a good recovery challenge in the penalty area to stop the chance. Switched off for the Wrexham goal, not being aware of who was around him.

Harry Maguire 5

Was cheered by the natives every time he was on the ball. Not afraid to step into midfield to start United attacks off, but leading a defence that struggled to deal with long balls from Wrexham.

Luke Shaw 6

Looked to get forward when he could - but Wrexham did have some early joy with longer balls into his channel.

Andrey Santos 7

Lost the ball in the middle of the park for a dangerous Wrexham chance, but was saved by the offside flag. Always looking to get involved in the deeper position, helping to snuff out danger in front of the defence.

Jack Fletcher 5

Was keen to get forward to help the attack when he could, but didn't get too much service.

Mason Mount 5

Was busy in the middle of the park, looking for the more creative passes to make chances.

Bryan Mbeumo 6

Showed a couple of neat touches, and was United's most dangerous attacking threat. Looked to help out Yoro defensively on the right.

Joshua Zrkzee 4

As usual, came deep to try and link up play. His touch often let him down.

Patrick Dorgu 5

Played an advanced role on the left in front of Luke Shaw, although the two would often swap, with Dorgu dropping back, allowing Shaw to go forward.

Radak Vitek 7

Was more involved in the build-up play than Heaton, with his starting position much higher up, providing an option for his defence. Made a good save to stop Wrexham doubling their lead in a one-on-one situation.

Jaydan Kamason 6

Like any modern-day full-back, was happy to move forward with the ball and join in with attacks. Was booked for a late challenge on Dobson.

Dan Armer 7

Both centre-backs looked comfortable in possession and weren't really troubled by Wrexham's attack.

Jacob Devaney 7

Both centre-backs looked comfortable in possession, like his defensive partner wasn't really troubled by Wrexham's attack including Kieffer Moore.

Harry Amass 7

Not afraid to get forward as United looked to take the game to Wrexham, made one great challenge to regain possession and start an attack.

Dan Gore 8

Made a good run beyond the Wrexham defence to create arguably United's best chance. Took up some good positions in midfield. and showed some good touches.

Tyler Fletcher 8

Wore the captain's armband for the second half, covered his defence well and led by example. in the middle of the park.

Shea Lacey 6

Had a tame shot saved by Danny Ward, but struggled to get too involved in the second half.

Toby Collyer 7

Tracked back well to snuff out any danger, but was often one of the more advanced midfielders, leading the press.

Ethan Williams 6

Struggled to get too involved on the right, but got back well to help his defence when needed.
