Cristiano Ronaldo endured a frustrating return to Lisbon as the veteran forward missed a golden chance and had a goal disallowed before being substituted in Portugal's 1-0 win over Wales.

Ronaldo, 41, had admitted in the build-up to the Nations League tie that he had considered retiring from international football after Portugal's World Cup exit in the summer.

The star has instead opted to continue his international career and captained defending Nations League winners Portugal in Lisbon, where he initially made his name 24 years ago.

While Ronaldo led the line in Portugal's first match under new coach Jorge Jesus, his Al-Nassr team-mate Joao Felix scored the opening goal with a deflected effort in the 22nd minute.

Ronaldo went close to doubling Portugal's advantage in the early stages of the second half.

After pulling away from Wales' defenders, Ronaldo looked set to provide the finishing touch to a Ruben Neves cross from six yards out.

The star was ultimately left frustated when his effort was ruled out by VAR for offside

Ronaldo, however, only proved able to steer a left-footed volley over the bar and ultimately found himself lying frustrated in the goalmouth.

His moment then appeared to have arrived in the 58th minute as Ronaldo ran onto a through pass before finishing past Wales' goalkeeper Danny Ward.

Ronaldo ran away to the corner flag and performed his iconic celebration, only for his joy to be dampened by a VAR check.

Portugal fans jeered and Ronaldo waved his arm in frustration when the goal was ultimately ruled out for offside, with the forward having made his run too early beyond the last defender.

His frustrating night came to an end in the 67th minute when he was substituted to a standing ovation, with Goncalo Ramos coming on in his place.

Portugal, who had missed several openings to extend their lead, survived a scare when a Brennan Johnson shot hit the woodwork before Lewis Koumas' follow-up was blocked.

The hosts would hold on to secure a narrow victory on Jesus' first game in the dugout.

Post-match, Jesus explained his decision to substitute Ronaldo, stating that he needed a fresh forward to press from the front.

'That's what the game dictated, there were 25 minutes left and I needed to have at least one player who was fresh to press the build-up play,' Jesus said.

'I might not have had, technically, in offensive terms, the quality that Cris has to appear and hold the ball, but I knew that Goncalo [Ramos] would provide defensive speed right in our first defensive line, which is important.

'That's pretty much what I did, also because technically he didn't have that many plays.

'But anyway, I'm satisfied with the team.'
