The most expensive African players as Diomande joins Real Madrid

Yan Diomande is officially the most expensive African footballer of all time after completing his move Real Madrid.

Los Blancos will pay RB Leipzig an eye-watering £107 transfer fee for the Ivorian winger, with an additional £13 million in potential add-ons included in the deal.

Even if Real don’t have to stump up any add-ons, Diomande will move for more money than any player from Africa in the history of the sport.

It’s the biggest fee the Spanish giants have ever shelled out for a player, surpassing the £88.5 million they paid Borussia Dortmund to sign Jude Bellingham in 2023.

And it is also the second largest fee any club has ever paid for a teenager, behind the £165.7 million Paris Saint-Germain paid to sign Kylian Mbappe from AS Monaco in 2017.

After registering 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances last season, and an impressive showing at the FIFA World Cup, Diomande was in high demand this summer. Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and PSG were all interested in signing the 19-year-old, but none of them were willing to match Madrid’s mammoth offer.

It is almost £50 million more than Arsenal spent on signing Nicolas Pepe from Lille in 2019, which was the record transfer fee for an African player until this week.

If we compare the list of the current five most expensive footballers from the continent with the list we published only a year ago, much has changed. There are now four new entries, pushing out the likes of Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez, Achraf Hakimi of Morocco and Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen surpassed his own £57.5 million move to Napoli in 2020 with a shock £64.8 million transfer to Galatasaray last summer, while Cameroon’s Bryan Mbeumo joined Manchester United from Brentford for £71 million.

Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo made a £64 million switch from Bournemouth to Manchester City this past January, a transfer that has thus far proven money well spent.
