Man United Transfers Move Quickly as Carrick Clears Goalkeeper Picture

Manchester United are getting on with it. No drama, no grandstanding, just a clear attempt to reshape the squad under Michael Carrick before the new season starts. According to Standard, United “have agreed a double transfer deal” with Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek both heading out, and it makes practical sense.

Bayindir never looked close to becoming a genuine first-choice option. The report states that “Bayindir has found first-team minutes had to come by”, so a loan to Celta Vigo is the obvious outcome. If it works, the Spanish side can make it permanent for around £3.5m. There is nothing complicated here, a player needs games, United need clarity.

Vitek is a more interesting case. He is “joining Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £14m” after impressing at Bristol City, with “an initial £7m” fee and several protection clauses for United. The 35 per cent sell-on clause, matching rights and a buy-back option suggest the club see value in him, even if they do not see immediate space for him. That is sensible squad management.

Squad Reshape Continues

The wider picture matters. United already moved for Andrey Santos and then triggered the £35m release clause for Youri Tielemans. Outgoing business has been just as aggressive, with Rasmus Hojlund gone after his Napoli move and others such as Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho also leaving.

This is what a reset looks like. It is rarely sentimental and it is rarely tidy.

Left-Back Remains Priority

Standard adds that “Carrick remains keen to sign a new left-back”, which is hardly surprising when “the veteran Luke Shaw [is] the only recognized player in that position in the first-team squad”. Lewis Hall is named as “a key target”, though “a deal for the Newcastle player is said to be extremely difficult to do”.

That is the next issue United need to solve. Goalkeepers are being sorted, midfield has been addressed, but balance on the left still looks unfinished.

Our View

From a relaxed Manchester United fan perspective, this all feels pretty reasonable. Bayindir going out on loan is fine. He was not playing, and there is no point keeping a goalkeeper around just to fill a seat in training. If Celta Vigo take him permanently for £3.5m, nobody at Old Trafford is going to lose sleep over it.

Vitek is the one that catches the eye. If United really have protected themselves with a sell-on, matching rights and a buy-back option, then that is smart business. Supporters always ask the club to act more cleverly with young players, and this sounds exactly like that. If he develops into a top keeper, United still have a route back in. If he does not, they still bank solid money.

The more important point is that Carrick appears to know what he wants. There is a bit more decisiveness in this window. Tielemans for £35m looks like a proper first-team move, Andrey Santos adds energy, and trimming players who are not central to the plan is overdue.

The left-back situation is the obvious concern. Relying on Luke Shaw alone would be asking for trouble over a long season. If Lewis Hall is too difficult, then move on and get someone else. That is the test now, less talk, more action. So far, this looks like a squad being shaped with a plan, which is more than can be said for some recent summers.
