Manchester United must beat Aston Villa to climb out of the relegation zone

Michael Carrick has revealed he has not been offered any assurances over his future as Manchester United head coach.

Man United host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, and the stakes are even higher for Carrick - whose position continues to be in doubt following a disappointing start to the season.

While United produced a spirited comeback against Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday night to end a run of nine games without a win across all competitions, their crisis has deepened ahead of welcoming Villa to Old Trafford.

As a result of Nottingham Forest’s win over Manchester City on Saturday evening, Man Utd have dropped into the relegation zone and are two points from safety.

Only a win over Villa will be enough to ensure United do not spent the entirety of the November international break in the bottom three, though defeat to Unai Emery’s side will likely see calls for Carrick to be sacked grow even louder.

Carrick, though, has revealed has admitted that he has not been told he is certain to be Man Utd head coach after the international break, but says place are in place for the two-week period.

“No, no. Just carry on as absolute normal,” he told reporters. “Maybe three or four senior players will be in and around [the training ground], but we’ll certainly train next week and maybe have the weekend off.

“We’ll see how that develops, who’s left behind, who’s with us and what they need. But there’ll certainly be training next week.

“Whatever happens, what’s going to happen is going to happen in terms of the game (against Villa), and we’ve got to prepare right, looking forward to it.

“I said the other night I was really looking forward to the game going into it, I genuinely was. I wasn’t making anything up there for you.

“Playing at home on the back of the other night, the supporters hopefully looking forward to coming and energised and feeling good about what they might see.
