Marcus Rashford has been told that he could play on the left side for Manchester United next season, with the club urged to keep hold of him. The forward is currently on a season-long loan from United to Barcelona .

The agreement between the club includes a £26 million option to purchase Rashford at the end of the season. However, there's uncertainty as to whether the Spanish side will activate their clause - with some reports suggesting they may instead seek to negotiate a lower fee with United .

Subsequent claims suggest that Premier League and European clubs have already made enquiries about a potential summer transfer. The same report indicates that Rashford is likely to be reintegrated into United's first team squad if a move doesn't come to fruition, in the latest twist over his future.

Ex-United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has now urged the club to give the forward another opportunity, under a different manager, whether that be Michael Carrick or somebody else. He has also identified the ideal role for the 28-year-old next season.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Hargreaves said: "I think, obviously, Marcus has done brilliantly at Barcelona. But again, I'd love to see him on the left-hand side [at United].

"That's probably the only spot where I think there's a bit of space for somebody in that left-wing position. I think Marcus would suit brilliantly."

He added: "Sometimes the change of scenery is good for both, but I'd love to see him. I just love watching Marcus play, and he's an academy boy.

"The climate's different now, so he might thrive in that as well. I hope he stays, but I can understand if he doesn't as well."

Rashford has enjoyed a productive season with Barcelona, netting 10 times and registering 13 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions. He has, though, been deployed as a substitute more frequently than not in recent weeks.

Rashford himself has already expressed his views on a permanent move to Barca. "[I want to stay for] as many [seasons] as possible. We will see," he told TNT Sports back in October.

"I have to focus on trying to do my job and trying to help the team in whichever way I can." He added: "I'm learning a lot, it's a new style of football.

"But it's making me a better player. Honestly, it's an amazing experience. I've always been a huge admirer of Barcelona, every player my age has watched them play, it's amazing football."
